Cuisine ork
Hurlg
Most races find the notion of drinking decaying animal fat mixed
with grain alcohol revolting at best. Characters who drink hurlg
for the first time must make Willpower (7) Tests to even swallow
the brew. Failure on the test means a bad reaction to the drink,
such as stomach cramps, vomiting, or passing out. Hurlg is something
one can get used to, though, and the Difficulty Number for
the Willpower Test is lowered by 1 with each mug that goes down
smoothly. Additionally, the symptoms of bad reactions become
less severe the lower the Difficulty Number. Once the Difficulty
Number reaches 1, the character can drink hurlg without any tests
or adverse reactions for the rest of his life. Characters who have a
bad reaction on a test to resist the effects of hurlg, however, raise
the Difficulty Number by 1 the next time they try the drink.
The many sumptuous varieties of hurlg discovered by ork brewers
are no different in strength, only taste (such as the subtle difference
of the bouquet of thundra versus cat fat).
Quaalz
The famous bean dish only orks seem to really savor, quaalz is
sold from open stalls at every second street corner in Claw Ridge
and Gevosht, mainly to travelers from or on their way to tribal lands.
For an additional copper, some sort of flavoring is often available,
such as peppers. A potentially and literally beefed-up meal includes
chunks of meat, although this is most often goat.
Snakestick
A few among the carad tribes have actively hunted for carad
cobras ever since the end of the Scourge, for their poison (to more
easily hunt larger prey, or Landisians, Therans, or anyone else
passing through) and skin, and the byproduct of the hunt is usually
snake meat, eaten at the campfire when the hunting party has
settled in for the night. The snake is draped around a stick and the
stick staked into the ground, making for a simple but rich meal
that does not require much tending.
Ever since the return of the scorchers and cavalries, there has
been considerable hype around snakestick, as there has been around
so many other products involving the carad cobra. It is often sold
as “cobrastick” in Claw Ridge, but only rarely contains any cobra
meat, and sometimes not even any snake meat at all. What do these
newcomers know anyway?
Uyataa Pepper
The uyataa pepper is perhaps the nastiest substance voluntarily
eaten in Cara Fahd, as it is actively at odds with Namegiver biology.
The pepper juice is so acidic as to cause skin irritation if left
on the flesh of any Namegiver but an obsidiman. The pepper juice
burns any sensitive nerves with which it comes in contact, such as
in the mouth or eyes; if it gets in either location it causes great pain,
inflicting a –1 penalty to all Action Tests. The affected area must
be washed out with milk and then water. To avoid this effect, the
victim makes a Toughness or Resist Poison ( Test. Attempting
to actually swallow a bite while one’s mouth is burning requires a
successful Willpower ( Test
Eating Ork Foo
Ork stomachs can handle food vile enough to make
another Namegiver very, very sick. Ork food in general is
spiced to the point where most elves, windlings, and humans
have difficulty eating it: the gamemaster may choose to
require a Toughness (5) Test if a character of one of these
races eats more than a small amount of ork food without
bread or milk to soak it up. If he fails, he finds out the origin
of the word “hurlg.
